Pepi Stiegler began skiing at the age of six, and became the Austrian Junior Champion in slalom by the age of 15. He went on to win a silver medal in giant slalom at the 1960 Winter Olympic Games in Squaw Valley. In 1961, after deciding to specialize in slalom and giant slalom, Pepi had one of his best years ever, winning four of the most important international slaloms, including the Austrian championship.
During the summer and fall of 1962, Pepi trained and became an Austrian certified ski instructor. At the 1964 Winter Olympic Games in Innsbruck, Pepi went on to win a gold medal in slalom and a bronze in giant slalom.
In 1966, he accepted the position of Ski School Director and Director of Skiing for Jackson Hole Ski Corporation where, in addition to his ski school duties, he coached juniors and conducted race camps for many years. He became a member of the Intermountain Ski Instructors Association (ISIA) in 1970 and served on the Board of Directors from 1978 to 1982.
In 2001, Pepi was inducted into the U.S. National Ski Hall of Fame. After 37 years, Pepi Stiegler retired from his position as Director of Skiing at Jackson Hole in 2002.
