The 2034 Winter Olympic Games will be returning to Utah!  In honor of this exciting announcement, we are thrilled to invite you and your students to experience a new, engaging, and educational field trip at the Alf Engen Ski Museum at Utah Olympic Park in Park City. Our fourth-grade field trip curriculum has been completely updated to reflect the current Utah Core Standards in English/Language Arts, Mathematics, Science with Engineering Education, and Social Studies.

Highlights of our new field trip program include:

  • new interactive and experimentation stations with more museum artifacts for students to explore
  • immersion of Native American culture and civil rights history in the Winter Games
  • the math and science of Utah Olympic Park’s bobsled track and ski jumps, connecting our history and our future with a Park tour
  • student learning directly tied to the curriculum so that leaving the classroom is worthwhile and easy to justify

The Alf Engen Ski Museum will fund transportation costs for your school’s 4th graders, and space is limited to 50 students per day.  Field trips are typically scheduled on Wednesdays or Fridays from 9:30 am to 12:30 pm. Please check the calendar on our Field Trip Availability tab below for available dates and make your reservations as soon as possible.  Priority is given to fourth-grade classes.

You can access our new field trip program stations script below.

A document outlining the alignment of our new field trip stations to the fourth-grade standards is also available below.

Please let us know if you have any questions. We look forward to the opportunity to welcome your students to Alf Engen for an unforgettable educational adventure!

Sincerely,

The Alf Engen Ski Museum Team

When do you offer field trips?

We typically offer field trips on Wednesdays or Fridays from 9:30 am to 12:30 pm. Please check the Field Trip Availability tab to view our bookings calendar and ensure there isn’t another field trip booked on the day you would like to visit.

What is the maximum number of students you can accommodate?

We like to keep our field trips at 50 students to ensure small group participation in a quality program. If you have multiple fourth grade classes that would exceed this capacity, you may book half the grade one day and the other half a different day.

What is the cost?

The field trip is free of charge.  We also provide funding for your transportation, thanks to our sponsors—the Marriner S. Eccles Foundation and Summit County RAP Tax Grant.

Where will the field trip take place?

The field trip begins with a tour of Utah Olympic Park, including the bobsled track and ski jump areas.  We then return to the practice pool and the Alf Engen Ski Museum, where students enjoy six interactive stations led by our docents.  Inside they will experience the science and math of the Winter Games through a hockey demonstration, learn about Park City’s transformation from a mining to a ski resort town, interact with “the greatest snow on earth” through a science experiment, and explore the geography of Utah in our snow safety exhibit.  Students continue learning upstairs in the Eccles 2002 Olympic Winter Games Museum.  They will understand the significance of Native American culture and civil rights in the Games with our Social Studies station.  They will end with a fun math and science station in our hockey and curling area, creating their own ice sheets using angles and measurements.

Where is the Utah Olympic Park?

Utah Olympic Park is located about 30 minutes east of Salt Lake City and about 4 miles northwest of Park City.

Where will students be able to eat lunch?

We have large tables for students to eat lunch inside the Alf Engen Ski Museum.

Are there lesson plans available to use before or after our visit?

Our education team is working on updating our lesson plans right now!  In the meantime, we highly recommend the activities provided on our Lesson Plans tab.  Each lesson directly relates to the curriculum covered in our field trip stations.  These activities can be used in your classroom before or after your students visit the museum.  The lessons are also great to use if you are unable to visit us!

We are also excited about our new student activity book The Road to 2034, and will share it with you as soon as it's finished!
