Powder Mountain

Even on the busiest day, you may only find one skier per two acres of terrain at Powder Mountain. During the first half of the 20th century, Powder Mountain was the winter range for Frederick James Cobabe’s sheep. Now it is one of the largest ski ares in the United States. Located just east of Eden, Utah, Powder Mountain is a not-so-well-kept secret among locals and visitors alike.

Historical Events at Powder Mountain

Reed Hastings Takes Majority Control

Billionaire and Netflix co-founder Reed Hastings injected a massive $100 million capital investment into the property to officially assume majority ownership and take over as CEO. He immediately pledged to utilize his extensive business background to modernize the mountain’s infrastructure while fiercely protecting its uncrowded skiing identity. His historic financial backing stabilized the resort’s long term future and kicked off an aggressive era of trail expansion and lift maintenance.

Largest Lift Expansion in the Nation

The resort completed a historic capital improvement project by simultaneously constructing the brand new Village and Mary’s quad chairlifts. This massive infrastructure push added over 1,000 acres of lift-served terrain to the map, cementing its status as the largest resort in North America at the time. The lift project was paired with a low-impact real estate development located in the southwest corner of the property, laying the groundwork for a modern, pedestrian-friendly base village.

The $40 Million Summit Acquisition

The resort was purchased for $40 million by the Summit Mountain Holding Group, an entrepreneurial collective looking to build a sustainable mountain eco-village. At the time of the transaction, the group was spearheaded by prominent media entrepreneur Elliot Bisnow and visionary venture capitalist Greg Mauro. The new owners immediately implemented a strict cap on season pass and daily ticket sales to ensure the mountain would never suffer from commercial overcrowding.

The High-Speed Hidden Lake Upgrade

In a major push toward modernization, the resort retired its older, slower Hidden Lake double chairlift. Workers replaced the aging infrastructure with a state-of-the-art high speed detachable quad lift to drastically cut down ride times to the 8,900-foot peak. This upgrade greatly enhanced guest efficiency, allowing powder hounds to quickly cycle through the mountain’s premier open bowls.

Sale to Western American Holdings

After managing the mountain as a tight-knit family enterprise for 35 consecutive years, Dr. Cobabe officially sold Powder Mountain Inc. to Western American Holdings. Despite the corporate transition, his daughter, Aleta Cobabe, chose to stay on and continue leading daily resort operations alongside the mountain’s original, seasoned management team. This leadership arrangement successfully preserved the local, independent family culture that the community cherished.

Unlocking Paradise Terrain

The resort executed a massive terrain expansion by installing the Paradise fixed-grip quad chairlift, instantly adding 1,300 acres of advanced, lift-accessed terrain to the trail map. This major shift allowed everyday skiers to access steep, technical glades that were previously reachable only by long hikes. Following the installation, management permanently relocated its in-bounds commercial snowcat skiing operations further out to the pristine fields of Lightning Ridge.
