VOLUNTEERS MADE THE GAMES POSSIBLE

Green uniforms indicated Field of Play volunteers, who helped prepare and maintain the Gamesโ€™ competition venues and sites.

While many of the volunteers were Utahns, thousands more came from all over the world to help make the 2002 Games one of the friendliest and most welcoming in Olympic history. They paid for their own transportation and housing, attended mandatory training sessions and worked tirelessly to ensure a successful Olympic Games.

LIGHT THE FIRE WITHIN

Yellow uniforms were worn by Guest Services volunteers who helped welcome the thousands of people visiting for the Games.

Volunteers served as the front-line ambassadors for the 2002 Games, providing a warm welcome to visitors. They woke in the dark to shovel sidewalks, prepare meals and transport athletes. Throughout the days they fielded questions, provided directions and managed crowds. When it fell dark again in the evenings, they kept working – without pay – to Light the Fire Within.

Approximately 26,000 individuals were selected as volunteers for the 2002 Games. For three weeks in February, they dotted the hills and valleys with their colorful coats. By Opening Ceremony, they were collectively known as Team 2002 and were led dauntlessly by the Salt Lake Organizing Committee (SLOC).

THE SAFEST GAMES IN MODERN HISTORY (RED)

THE SAFEST GAMES IN MODERN HISTORY

Red uniforms identified Medical volunteers and EMTs who served during the Games.

While there was no previous experience required to be a 2002 Olympic volunteer, many of the men and women who were selected possessed specific skills and were assigned duties accordingly. Thanks to their enthusiasm, time and special talents, the 2002 Winter Olympic Games were one of the safest, smoothest and most memorable Games in modern history.
