Beaver Mountain

Beaver Mountain opened in 1939 and is located near the summit of Logan Canyon in the Bear River Mountains. While smaller and less developed than a number of Utah ski resorts, Beaver Mountain is very popular with residents of nearby Logan, Utah State University, the surrounding Cache Valley and the Bear Lake region, including the southeastern corner of Idaho.

Historical Events at Beaver Mountain

Opened Chairlift

On January 15, 1939, Alta Ski Area opened the second chairlift in the country – the Collins Lift. A ticket for the lift that first season was .25 cents.

Hosted World Cup Races

In 1985, Park City Ski Area defied doubters by hosting the first of several “America’s Opening” World Cup ski races. These events are widely considered to be integral predecessors to Salt Lake City’s successful bid for the 2002 Winter Olympics.

2002 Deer Valley Events

With a spectator stadium large enough for 10,000 people, Deer Valley hosted several events during the Salt Lake 2002 Winter Olympics – including freestyle aerials and moguls.

Harold Seeholzer

Originally opened in 1939 by Harold Seeholzer, Beaver Mountain remains one of only a few American ski areas still owned and operated by the original founding family.

Wasatach Mountain Club

In 1936, members of the Wasatch Mountain Club installed a rope tow at Brighton, creating one of the first lift-served ski areas in the country.

First Snowboard Friendly Resort

At a time when only 7% of the nation’s ski areas permitted snowboarding, Powder Mountain threw open the gates and became one of Utah’s first snowboard-friendly ski resorts. By the end of the decade, Powder Mountain was hosting some of the state’s earliest snowboard pipe and slalom contests.
