Beaver Mountain opened in 1939 and is located near the summit of Logan Canyon in the Bear River Mountains. While smaller and less developed than a number of Utah ski resorts, Beaver Mountain is very popular with residents of nearby Logan, Utah State University, the surrounding Cache Valley and the Bear Lake region, including the southeastern corner of Idaho.
Originally opened in 1939 by Harold Seeholzer, Beaver Mountain remains one of only a few American ski areas still owned and operated by the original founding family.
Francis Harold Seeholzer, the founder of Beaver Mountain, was born in Logan, Cache County, Utah, to Theodore and Palmyra Seeholzer.
Seeholzer made his very first pair of skis by hand out of wood. In this era, skiing was still a freestyle backcountry adventure rather than a mainstream sport.
Resort founder Harold Seeholzer purchased his very first pair of manufactured wooden skis. This initial personal introduction to winter sports ignited a lifelong obsession with skiing and mountain recreation. His newfound passion laid the earliest conceptual groundwork for what would eventually transform into a regional ski haven.
Their son Ted Seeholzer was born. Ted eventually took over daily mountain operations as general manager after Harold passed away.
Because his father was a game warden, Harold spent massive amounts of time exploring the high mountains. He worked as a fur trapper and regularly conducted dangerous winter snow surveys for Utah State University before canyon roads existed.
