Perched high upon a stunning location in the Tushar Mountains, Eagle Point Resort is southern Utah’s steepest and deepest ski and snowboard resort. Considered a perfect getaway from the crowded slopes and high prices of the mega-resorts, this independently owned resort averages 350 annual inches of Utah’s Greatest Snow on Earth across 600 skiable acres and over 1500 vertical feet.
The ski resort officially debuted for the 1972–1973 winter season under its original name, the Mt. Holly Ski Area. Early infrastructure on the mountain was quite modest, consisting of a single double chairlift and an accompanying T-bar to pull skiers up the slope.
Following its inaugural season, the original owner, Conrad Koning, spotted a wild eagle soaring above the high alpine ridges. Inspired by this American symbol, Koning officially renamed the destination Eagle Point Resort.
To provide a central base camp for visiting skiers, Conrad and Amy Koning set up a temporary sawmill right at the base of the main chairlift. Workers milled local timber to construct the original Day Lodge, a structure known today as the Canyonside Lodge.
When the newly constructed lodge officially opened its doors, guests purchased their daily lift tickets directly from the small ski shop counter. During this introductory era, a full-day lift pass to ski the Tushar Mountains cost only $6.00. The Tushar Mountain Range is the third-highest mountain range in the state of Utah, with multiple peaks rising well over 12,000 feet. The ski resort itself is tucked high into this range, about 18 miles east of the town of Beaver, featuring a base elevation of 9,100 feet and a summit of 10,600 feet.
A massive development project began on the open mountain slopes directly adjacent to the Mt. Holly footprint. This newly cleared ski terrain and lodging area was christened the Elk Meadows Ski & Summer Resort.
After operating as separate, competing ski hills on the same mountain for nearly a decade, the two properties combined. The entities merged into a single consolidated resort operating entirely under the Elk Meadows brand.
